PART 11 — THE SECOND BENEFICIARY

“It was Marcus.”
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stared at the screen as if the name might change if he looked long enough.
Hope Mercer.
Marcus Mercer.
Two beneficiaries.
Two children connected to the same trust.
Marcus stopped struggling.
His face went completely blank.
“What did you say?”
Daniel looked up.
“Your name is listed.”
Marcus laughed once.
“That’s impossible.”
My father said nothing.
And that silence told me more than any explanation could.
Marcus saw it too.
He slowly turned toward him.
“Richard.”
My father looked away.
Marcus’s voice dropped.
“Why is my name there?”
No answer.
“WHY IS MY NAME THERE?”
My father finally looked at him.
“Because you were always part of it.”
Marcus stared.
“Part of what?”
The night seemed to hold its breath.
Police lights flashed across everyone’s faces.
Red.
Blue.
Red.
Blue.
Marcus’s mother began shaking.
Daniel looked toward her.
“You knew.”
She whispered, “Not everything.”
Marcus turned on her.
“You knew?”
She backed away.
“I suspected.”
“You suspected WHAT?”
I held Hope closer.
The baby stirred against me.
This was no longer just about money.
Something much older was finally breaking open.
Daniel looked at the trust record.
“Marcus is listed as a descendant.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“I’m already a Mercer.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not through the family line we thought.”
Marcus froze.
My father closed his eyes.
Marcus stared at him.
“No.”
My father said nothing.
“No.”
Marcus took one step forward before the officer stopped him.
“Say it.”
My father whispered, “Marcus.”
“SAY IT.”
Marcus’s mother began crying.
I suddenly understood.
Not completely.
But enough.
I looked at my father.
“Marcus is your son.”
Lena gasped.
Daniel stared at him.
Marcus did not move.
My father’s face collapsed.

“Yes.”
The word seemed to rip the entire night apart.
Marcus stared at him.
Then at his mother.
Then back at my father.
“No.”
Marcus’s mother whispered, “I’m sorry.”
Marcus laughed.
At first quietly.
Then louder.
“You’re sorry?”
He looked at the woman he had called his mother his entire life.
“You’re telling me my father wasn’t my father?”
She shook her head.
“He raised you.”
Marcus turned toward my father.
“And you?”
My father said nothing.
Marcus laughed again.
“You recruited me when I was nineteen.”
His voice cracked.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You brought me into the network.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me work for you.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I was your son the entire time?”
My father nodded.
Marcus suddenly lunged.
Three officers grabbed him.
“I’LL KILL YOU!”
My father did not move.
Marcus fought so violently that one officer nearly lost his grip.
“You used me!”
My father shouted back.
“I was trying to keep you alive!”
Marcus laughed hysterically.
“By turning me into a criminal?”
“You were already involved.”
“Because YOU PUT ME THERE!”
My father stepped closer.
“You wanted power.”
“I wanted you to tell me who I was!”
Silence.
Marcus froze as soon as he said it.
Everyone heard the truth beneath the rage.
He had known something was wrong.
Maybe not the details.
But somewhere inside him, he had always known.
My father lowered his voice.
“Your mother made me promise.”
Marcus turned toward her.
“What promise?”
She could barely speak.
“That you would never know.”
“Why?”
She shook her head.
“Because Richard was dangerous.”
My father flinched.
She continued.
“He had enemies.”
“I had a husband.”
She looked toward Daniel.
“Your father.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You were having an affair with Richard?”
Her tears fell faster.
“Yes.”
Daniel looked away.
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“So Daniel and I weren’t half-brothers.”
Nobody answered.
Marcus stared at him.
“We weren’t brothers at all.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“We were raised as brothers.”
Marcus snapped, “That is not the same thing.”
Daniel said quietly, “It was to me.”
Marcus looked at him.
For one brief second, all the hatred disappeared.
Then it returned.
Marcus turned back to my father.
“So the trust recognizes me because I’m your biological child.”
“Yes.”
“And Hope?”
My father hesitated.
Daniel looked at the screen again.
“Hope qualifies through Daniel’s line.”
Marcus stared at the phone.
“Then why are we both on Richard’s trust?”
My father said nothing.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Wait.”
He scrolled.
“There’s another document.”
My father immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t open it.”
Daniel looked up.
“Why?”
“Because it isn’t relevant.”
Marcus laughed.
“Oh, now I definitely want to hear it.”
Daniel opened the file.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then stopped.
“What?”
I asked.
He looked at my father.
“You changed the beneficiary structure fourteen years ago.”
My father whispered, “Daniel.”
Daniel ignored him.
“The trust doesn’t just require descendants.”
“What does it require?”
Daniel looked toward Hope.
“Survivorship.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
He read silently for another moment.
Then his face went pale.
“The final controlling beneficiary is determined by whoever remains eligible after the others are disqualified.”
Marcus stopped smiling.
“Disqualified how?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Criminal conviction.”
Marcus’s face changed.
Lena whispered, “Marcus would lose his share.”
Daniel nodded.
“If convicted of certain crimes.”
Marcus stared at my father.
“You knew.”
My father said nothing.
“You knew if I was arrested tonight, Hope would become sole beneficiary.”
Still nothing.
Marcus laughed.
“You planned this.”
My father snapped, “No.”
“You brought police here.”
“I didn’t.”
“You knew about Emily.”
“I found out three days ago.”
“You knew I would panic.”
My father shouted, “I was trying to stop you!”
Marcus smiled.
“No.”
He shook his head slowly.
“You wanted me to destroy myself.”
My father looked away.
And again, silence became an answer.
Daniel stared at him.
“Richard.”
My father whispered, “There was no clean way out.”
I felt sick.
Marcus had been manipulated.
That did not erase what he did.
Nothing could.
But my father had known exactly which direction Marcus would run when cornered.
And he had let him run straight into destruction.
I looked at my father.
“You used all of us.”
He turned toward me.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You used Marcus.”
“He made his own choices.”
“You used Daniel.”
“I protected him.”
“You used Lena.”
“I never wanted her involved.”
“You used me.”
His face fell.
I held Hope up slightly.
“And now everyone wants to tell me this baby is the key to something.”
I shook my head.
“She is not a key.”
Nobody spoke.
“She is not a beneficiary.”
Marcus laughed.
“Legally, she is.”
I looked at him.
“She is a child.”
My voice hardened.
“Not a trust.”
Not an account.
Not evidence.
Not revenge.
Not a weapon.
A child.
Daniel looked at me.
“What do you want to do?”
I looked toward the tablet.
“How do we stop the transfer?”
My father immediately said, “You can’t.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that true?”
He hesitated.
“No.”
My father snapped, “Daniel.”
Daniel kept looking at me.
“There’s an emergency renunciation clause.”
Marcus laughed.
“Of course there is.”
I asked, “What does it do?”
“Any beneficiary can refuse control.”
“Then I refuse for Hope.”
My father shook his head.
“You cannot make that decision alone.”
“She is my daughter.”
Daniel looked at me carefully.
“Legally, because of how the embryo was implanted, parentage may be complicated.”
I stared at him.
“Are you trying to take her?”
His eyes widened.
“No.”
Lena looked at him.
“Daniel.”
“I’m not.”
He stepped back.
“I don’t want the money.”
Marcus laughed.
“Everyone says that until they see the number.”
Daniel ignored him.
“I don’t want custody.”
I looked at Lena.
She immediately shook her head.
“Neither do I.”
Her eyes filled.
“She’s yours, Emily.”
I almost broke right there.
After everything.
After learning Hope shared Lena’s DNA.
After learning Daniel was alive.
Lena did not hesitate.
She reached toward the baby.
Not to take her.
Just to touch one tiny hand.
“You carried her.”
She smiled through tears.
“You survived for her.”
Hope wrapped her fingers around Lena’s.
Lena started crying.
“You’re her mother.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“So touching.”
I looked toward him.
He stared at Hope.
Something changed in his expression.
Not kindness.
Not remorse.
Something darker.
Calculation.
Daniel noticed too.
“Marcus.”
Marcus smiled.
“What?”
“Don’t.”
Marcus tilted his head.
“You think I’m going to hurt the baby?”
I held Hope tighter.
The officers moved Marcus farther away.
He laughed.
“I don’t need to hurt her.”
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus looked at the tablet.
“If Hope becomes sole beneficiary, somebody controls the trust until she’s an adult.”
Everyone went quiet.
Daniel immediately looked at the document.
Marcus smiled.
“Read the guardianship clause.”
My father shouted, “No.”
Daniel scrolled.
His face changed.
“Oh God.”
I felt cold.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“The trustee is automatically assigned custodial control over financial decisions.”
“Who is the trustee?”
Nobody answered.
I looked at my father.
“Who?”
My father whispered, “Me.”
Marcus started laughing.
I stared at him.
“You would control Hope’s money?”
“Only until she becomes an adult.”
“You created a trust that gives you control over hundreds of millions if my daughter inherits it?”
“It was designed years ago.”
“Before she existed.”
“Yes.”
“Then why was it designed like that?”
My father did not answer.
Marcus laughed harder.
“Because Hope wasn’t the original plan.”
The words stopped me.
I looked at him.
“What?”
Marcus smiled.
“This trust wasn’t built for Hope.”
Daniel stared at my father.
“Who was it built for?”
My father said nothing.
Marcus looked at me.
Then at Lena.
And finally at my father.
“For Emily.”
My chest tightened.
“No.”
Marcus nodded.
“You’re Richard’s daughter.”
I almost laughed.
“That’s not exactly a secret anymore.”
Marcus smiled.
“No.”
He looked at my father.
“Tell her.”
I turned toward him.
“Tell me what?”
My father’s eyes filled.
Marcus answered instead.
“You’re not his only daughter.”
Lena froze.
I looked at her.
“No.”
Marcus continued.
“Richard had another child.”
My father whispered, “Marcus, stop.”
Marcus smiled.
“A child he hid even better than me.”
Daniel stared at my father.
“Who?”
My father looked at Lena.
Her face went white.
“No.”
I looked between them.
“Dad?”
He could not speak.
Lena stepped backward.
“No.”
I understood before anyone said it.
My heart cracked open all over again.
I looked at my sister.
“Lena?”
She stared at my father.
He whispered the truth.
“You’re my daughter too.”
Lena stopped breathing.
Marcus laughed.
“And now we finally have the full family tree.”
But Daniel was no longer listening.
He was staring at the tablet.
“What?”
I asked.
Daniel scrolled rapidly.
“What?”
His face went pale.
“There’s a third active beneficiary.”
My father froze.
Marcus stopped laughing.
Lena looked at Daniel.
“Who?”
He slowly raised the tablet.
The third name had appeared beneath Hope and Marcus.
Not mine.
Not Lena’s.
A name none of us expected.
DANIEL MERCER.
Marcus whispered, “That’s impossible.”
Daniel stared at my father.
“You told me I was never part of this trust.”
My father said nothing.
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“Why am I listed?”
Then the tablet flashed.
BENEFICIARY STATUS UPDATE.
Everyone watched.
MARCUS MERCER — PENDING DISQUALIFICATION.
HOPE MERCER — ACTIVE.
DANIEL MERCER — ACTIVE.
And beneath those three lines, a countdown appeared.
00:59:58
00:59:57
00:59:56
Lena whispered, “What happens in an hour?”
My father stared at the countdown.
His face drained of color.
And for the first time since he returned from the dead, he looked more afraid than Marcus.
Daniel stepped toward him.
“Richard.”
My father whispered, “We need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Now.”
“What happens when that timer reaches zero?”
My father looked at Hope.
Then at Daniel.
And finally at me.
“The trust doesn’t transfer money.”
My stomach dropped.
“Then what does it transfer?”
He swallowed.
“Ownership.”
“Of what?”
My father looked toward the burning house.
Then beyond it.
Toward the city.
“Everything.”

PART 12 — THE HOUR THAT COULD DESTROY THEM ALL

“Everything?”
My voice barely came out.
My father looked at the countdown on Daniel’s tablet.
00:58:41
00:58:40
00:58:39
Daniel stepped closer.
“What exactly does the trust own?”
My father did not answer.
Marcus laughed weakly.
“He means companies.”
My father looked at him.
Marcus smiled.
“Right?”
Still silence.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Richard.”
My father finally spoke.
“Companies.”
“How many?”
“Hundreds.”
Lena stared at him.
“What kind?”
He looked toward the police surrounding us.
“Banks.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
My father continued.
“Real estate firms.”
Marcus’s smile vanished.
“Shipping companies.”
David lifted his head from the ambulance.
“Private security.”
The officers exchanged looks.
My father continued.
“Data centers.”
“Medical groups.”
“Government contractors.”
The night went silent.
I looked down at Hope.
A newborn sleeping against my chest.
And somehow, according to a document created before she was born, she was now connected to an empire built on money, secrets, and blood.
I whispered, “You said it transfers ownership.”
“Yes.”
“To Hope and Daniel?”
“If Marcus becomes disqualified.”
Marcus immediately looked toward the officer holding him.
“What counts as disqualification?”
Daniel checked the file.
“Conviction.”
Marcus laughed.
“Then I’m still active.”
My father shook his head.
“No.”
Marcus stared at him.
“No?”
“The trust contains an emergency clause.”
Daniel scrolled faster.
His eyes stopped.
“Oh.”
Marcus’s voice sharpened.
“What?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Formal criminal indictment triggers temporary suspension.”
Marcus went pale.
The officer beside him checked his radio.
Then his face changed.
Marcus noticed.
“What?”
The officer said nothing.
Marcus shouted, “WHAT?”
The officer looked directly at him.
“A federal indictment was filed eleven minutes ago.”
Marcus stared.
“For what?”
Daniel’s phone vibrated.
Then Lena’s.
Then several officers’ radios.
The charges began appearing.
Conspiracy.
Financial fraud.
Kidnapping.
Attempted murder.
Evidence tampering.
Bribery.
Daniel kept reading.
Marcus stopped breathing.
Then the tablet updated.
MARCUS MERCER — SUSPENDED.
Hope cried.
The countdown continued.
00:56:13
00:56:12
00:56:11
Marcus stared at the screen.
“No.”
Daniel looked at my father.
“So now what?”
My father whispered, “Now Hope and Daniel become controlling beneficiaries.”
Marcus screamed.
“NO!”
Officers restrained him.
“You don’t understand!”
He looked at me.
“Emily!”
I did not answer.
“Emily, listen to me!”
For years, I had listened whenever Marcus raised his voice.
That habit died in the basement.
He struggled harder.
“If Daniel controls those companies, thousands of people lose everything!”
Daniel looked toward him.
“Why?”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Because half those businesses only survive because of the network.”
My father nodded.
Daniel turned toward him.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“You built a system that collapses if ownership changes?”
“I built safeguards.”
Marcus shouted, “You built bombs!”
Everyone stared at him.
My father’s face changed.
Daniel noticed.
“Bombs?”
My father snapped, “Not literal.”
Marcus laughed.
“Tell them.”
“Marcus.”
“Tell them what happens when the ownership keys change.”
Lena looked at my father.
“What happens?”
He sighed.
“Access credentials rotate.”
“That’s normal.”
“Not these.”
Daniel frowned.
“What changes?”
“Financial control.”
“Security systems.”
“Private data repositories.”
My skin went cold.
“What kind of data?”
My father looked at me.
“Records.”
“Whose?”
“Everyone’s.”
Marcus smiled.
“There it is.”
My father ignored him.
Daniel asked, “Personal records?”
“Yes.”
“Medical?”
“Yes.”
“Financial?”
“Yes.”
“Government?”
My father hesitated.
Daniel’s face went hard.
“Government?”
“Yes.”
One officer immediately stepped away and spoke into his radio.
Marcus laughed.
“This isn’t a trust.”
Daniel stared at my father.
“It’s leverage.”
My father closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The word hit harder than I expected.
Hope was not inheriting wealth.
She was inheriting leverage over thousands, maybe millions, of people.
I looked at my father.
“Turn it off.”
“I can’t.”
“You created it.”
“Yes.”
“Then stop it.”
“I cannot.”
Marcus laughed.
“He built the system so no single person could dismantle it.”
I looked toward Daniel.
“Can you?”
He shook his head.
“I don’t even understand all of it yet.”
The countdown reached:
00:52:44
Lena stared at the numbers.
“We have less than an hour.”
My father stepped closer.
“Daniel, you need to accept control temporarily.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because Hope is a newborn.”
“So?”
“If nobody accepts administrative authority, the trust enters autonomous mode.”
Marcus stopped laughing.
Even he looked concerned.
“What does autonomous mode do?”
My father hesitated.
Marcus shouted, “ANSWER HIM!”
My father looked toward Daniel.
“It executes the original directives.”
“What directives?”
“Debt collection.”
Marcus’s face changed.
David whispered, “Oh hell.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
David shook his head.
“If Richard means what I think he means, this isn’t about sending letters.”
My father looked exhausted.
“The network financed people.”
“Who?”
“Politicians.”
The officers immediately looked up.
“Corporations.”
“Private contractors.”
“Criminal organizations.”
Lena whispered, “You loaned them money?”
“Not exactly.”
Daniel understood.
“You bought influence.”
My father nodded.
Marcus laughed.
“And if the system thinks the owners are gone…”
My father finished.
“It calls everything in.”
The officer nearest us asked, “How?”
My father looked at him.
“Automatically.”
“Money?”
“Money.”
“Contracts.”
“Information.”
“Blackmail.”
Nobody spoke.
I felt sick.
“People could die.”
My father looked away.
“Yes.”
I stared at him.
“And you let this system exist?”
“It was supposed to prevent anyone from attacking the network.”
“By threatening everyone?”
“Yes.”
My voice broke.
“That is not protection.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“It became something else.”
The countdown continued.
00:49:02
Daniel held the tablet.
“What do I need to do?”
My father looked at him.
“You need to accept temporary control.”
Lena grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“Don’t.”
He looked at her.
“People could get hurt.”
“And you trust him?”
She pointed toward my father.
“After everything tonight?”
Daniel looked at Richard.
“No.”
My father nodded.
“You shouldn’t.”
That surprised everyone.
Marcus laughed.
“Finally, something true.”
My father looked at Daniel.
“Don’t trust me.”
“Then why should I touch any of this?”
“Because you don’t need to trust me.”
He pointed at the tablet.
“You need to read.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Every instruction is documented.”
“By who?”
“Three independent trustees.”
“Names.”
My father looked toward the officers.
“One is dead.”
“Second?”
“Dr. Nathan Cole.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“And third?”
My father did not answer.
Marcus noticed.
He smiled.
“Oh.”
I felt dread rise again.
“Who?”
My father looked at me.
“You.”
I stared.
“What?”
“You were named years ago.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I was a teenager.”
“Exactly.”
Lena looked at him.
“You made your teenage daughter a trustee?”
“Not active.”
“Then what?”
“A successor.”
My father lowered his eyes.
“If everyone else failed.”
My chest tightened.
“So this entire system eventually comes to me?”
“It was never supposed to.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Nothing tonight was supposed to happen.”
The tablet suddenly beeped.
A new line appeared.
SUCCESSOR TRUSTEE DETECTED.
EMILY CARTER.
My entire body went cold.
Marcus started laughing.
The officer holding him whispered, “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Daniel looked at me.
The tablet displayed three options.
ACCEPT.
DECLINE.
DEFER.
Lena whispered, “Don’t touch anything.”
My father stepped closer.
“Emily.”
“No.”
“Listen.”
“I’ve listened enough.”
“If you decline, Hope remains beneficiary but has no authorized adult controller.”
“Daniel.”
Daniel shook his head.
“My status is still pending verification.”
The tablet confirmed it.
DANIEL MERCER — IDENTITY VERIFICATION REQUIRED.
Marcus smiled.
“They think he’s dead.”
Daniel looked at my father.
“How long does verification take?”
“Hours.”
“We have forty-seven minutes.”
“I know.”
I stared at the three buttons.
Accept.
Decline.
Defer.
“What does defer do?”
My father hesitated.
I looked at him.
“What does it do?”
“Transfers authority to the emergency trustee.”
“Who?”
Silence.
Marcus started laughing again.
I looked at him.
“You know.”
He nodded.
“Of course.”
“Who is it?”
Marcus smiled.
“My mother.”
Everyone turned toward her.
Her face went pale.
“No.”
My father stared at her.
“You?”
She shook her head.
“I never accepted.”
Marcus laughed.
“You didn’t have to.”
Daniel scrolled.
Then stopped.
“He’s right.”
Marcus’s mother looked horrified.
Daniel read:
“Emergency trustee designation activated by default if successor defers.”
My father whispered, “So those are the choices.”
I stared at the tablet.
Accept control.
Decline and risk autonomous mode.
Defer and hand control to the woman who helped keep me in a cage.
The countdown reached:
00:45:19
I looked at Marcus’s mother.
She stepped backward.
“I don’t want it.”
Marcus smiled.
“You might not get a choice.”
She looked at me.
“Emily, don’t defer.”
I almost laughed.
“You think I trust you?”
“No.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“You shouldn’t.”
That answer surprised me.
She continued.
“But if you defer, Marcus can still influence me.”
Marcus smiled.
“At least she knows herself.”
She looked toward him.
“No.”
Her voice hardened.
“That ends tonight.”
Marcus’s smile disappeared.
She turned toward the officer.
“I want to confess.”
Marcus shouted, “MOM!”
She ignored him.
“Everything.”
The officer stepped closer.
“Everything about what?”
“The clinic.”
“The cage.”
“The money.”
She looked toward David.
“And Daniel.”
David stopped moving.
Marcus screamed.
“DON’T SAY ANOTHER WORD!”
She looked at her son.
“I protected you your whole life.”
Marcus’s face twisted.
“You created me.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I excused you.”
Tears ran down her face.
“And those are not the same thing.”
Marcus went silent.
She turned toward me.
“I cannot undo what I did.”
“No.”
“I know.”
She looked at Hope.
“But I can stop helping him.”
Then she raised her hands toward the police.
“Arrest me.”
The officer nodded.
Two others approached.
Marcus stared at her as they placed handcuffs on her wrists.
“You choose her?”
His mother looked toward me.
“No.”
She looked back at Marcus.
“I’m finally choosing against you.”
Something in Marcus’s face broke.
The countdown continued.
00:41:08
Daniel looked toward me.
“We still need to choose.”
I stared at the tablet.
“I accept.”
My father immediately said, “Wait.”
Everyone looked at him.
I narrowed my eyes.
“You wanted me to accept.”
“I did.”
“Then why wait?”
His face changed.
“There’s something you need to know first.”
Marcus smiled again.
“Here comes another secret.”
My father ignored him.
“If you accept trusteeship, you become legally responsible for everything the trust controls.”
Daniel frowned.
“Past crimes too?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
My father looked at me.
“Future actions.”
“I can shut them down.”
“Yes.”
“Then that’s what I’ll do.”
“It could take months.”
“I don’t care.”
“You’ll need protection.”
“I already needed protection.”
“Emily.”
“No.”
My voice hardened.
“My entire life, people have decided what I should know.”
What I should inherit.
Who I should trust.
What happened to my body.
Who my child belonged to.
Where I should live.
Whether I should survive.
I looked directly at my father.
“That ends tonight.”
He said nothing.
I reached toward the tablet.
Marcus shouted, “DON’T!”
Everyone turned.
His face was terrified.
Not angry.
Terrified.
I stared at him.
“Why?”
He shook his head.
“Emily, don’t accept it.”
“Why?”
“You don’t know what you’re becoming.”
“I’m becoming the person who shuts your world down.”
Marcus stared at me.
Then whispered:
“You can’t.”
I touched ACCEPT.
The tablet went black.
For one terrifying second, nothing happened.
Then the screen returned.
TRUSTEE ACCEPTANCE CONFIRMED.
EMILY CARTER — PRIMARY CONTROLLING TRUSTEE.
The countdown disappeared.
Daniel exhaled.
Lena started crying.
My father closed his eyes.
Marcus stared at the screen.
I expected relief.
Instead, alarms began sounding from every phone around us.
The officer checked his radio.
“What now?”
Daniel looked at the tablet.
His face changed.
“What?”
I asked.
He turned the screen toward me.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
But beneath it was something else.
A map.
Dozens of red dots.
Then hundreds.
Across the country.
Across Europe.
Across Asia.
Across the world.
Lena whispered, “What are those?”
My father went pale.
“Facilities.”
“What facilities?”
He did not answer.
Marcus smiled.
I looked at him.
“What?”
His voice was almost gentle.
“You accepted everything.”
My stomach dropped.
Daniel zoomed into one of the locations.
A label appeared.
ARCHIVE SITE 17.
STATUS: ACTIVE.
Another.
ARCHIVE SITE 22.
STATUS: ACTIVE.
Then one in our own city.
ARCHIVE SITE 01.
Daniel stared at it.
“It’s less than five miles away.”
My father suddenly grabbed the tablet.
“Turn that off.”
An officer stopped him.
“Don’t touch it.”
I looked at my father.
“What is Archive Site 01?”
He said nothing.
Marcus laughed.
“Tell her.”
My father whispered, “Marcus.”
Marcus smiled.
“She owns it now.”
I stared at him.
“What is inside?”
Marcus looked directly at me.
“People.”
My blood turned cold.
“What people?”
Marcus leaned closer despite the officers restraining him.
“The ones your father couldn’t afford to let talk.”
My father shouted, “That is not true!”
Marcus laughed.
Daniel looked at the map.
Then at my father.
“Richard.”
My father’s face collapsed.
Daniel repeated:
“What is inside Site 01?”
My father whispered:
“Witnesses.”
Lena stopped breathing.
“Alive?”
My father closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
I stared at him.
“How many?”
He looked at me.
“I don’t know anymore.”
The tablet suddenly beeped.
One location flashed.
ARCHIVE SITE 01.
EMERGENCY ACCESS REQUEST.
Daniel tapped it.
A live video appeared.
A dim underground room.
Rows of locked doors.
A man stood behind one of them, pounding against reinforced glass.
The audio activated.
His voice came through.
“HELLO?”
Everyone froze.
The man moved closer to the camera.
His face became visible.
Lena screamed.
I nearly dropped the tablet.
Because the man locked inside Archive Site 01 was someone whose funeral we had attended years ago.
Someone Marcus had repeatedly claimed was dead.
Someone Daniel had believed was gone forever.
Daniel whispered the name.
“Dad?”
And from behind the glass, Daniel’s father looked directly into the camera and shouted:
“DON’T TRUST RICHARD!”
