almost smiled.
A tired, broken smile.
“Apparently that was his favorite hobby.”
I looked at Brooke.
“What did Glenn do with Gene?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
“Kelsey?”
“She was there too.”
“How old?”
“Early twenties, maybe.”
My mind started lived another twenty-four years carrying it alone.
Why?
Deputy Carver’s phone buzzed.
He read the message.
“The letter may explain that.”
I looked at him immediately.
“What letter?”
“Addressed to you.”
My throat tightened.
“Read it.”
He hesitated.
“It’s personal.”
“Gene wrote it to me.”
He handed me the phone.
The deputy at the Ashby house had photographed the pages.
I zoomed in.
Gene’s handwriting covered both sides.
The first line nearly broke me.
Stacey, if you are reading this, then somebody forced the truth out before I could find the courage to tell you myself.
I stopped.
Evan whispered, “Mom?”
I shook my head and kept reading.
I met Kelsey’s mother, Diane, three years before I met you.
We were young and stupid and together only a few months.
She disappeared after an argument and never told me she was pregnant.
I did not know Kelsey existed until she found me when she was twenty-three.
My vision blurred.
I wiped my eyes.
The next paragraph was worse.
You were home with Evan when I went to Florida.
I told you it was work.
That was a lie I carried every day after.
I went because Kelsey contacted me and said she believed I was her father.
The DNA test proved she was right.
I whispered, “Oh, Gene.”
Evan put his hand over mine.
I kept reading.
I wanted to tell you.
God knows I tried.
But Kelsey was angry.
She things privately first.
I was wrong.
Then came Glenn.
I stopped.
Everybody leaned closer.
I read aloud this time.
“Glenn Ashby was working with Kelsey’s boyfriend at the time.”
Brooke whispered, “Boyfriend?”
I continued.
“He learned who I was and started helping Kelsey manage money I gave her.”
Sheila looked sick.
I kept reading.
“I gave Kelsey twenty thousand dollars the first year.”
“Then more.”
“I thought money could make up for twenty-three missing birthdays.”
“It couldn’t.”
Raymond murmured, “That may be where Glenn first saw an opportunity.”
I read the next lines.
“Glenn began pressuring me to create a trust.”
“He said Kelsey needed protection from herself.”
“He was right about some things and wrong about why.”
“Kelsey had debts.”
“She had anger.”
“And she had started gambling.”
Brooke whispered, “Oh.”
I looked at her.
“You knew?”
“No.”
The letter continued.
“I named Glenn successor trustee because he convinced me he was helping her.”
“If I had known then what I know now, I would have named anyone else.”
My stomach dropped.
“What did Gene know?”
I scrolled lower.
There it was.
“Glenn was stealing from Kelsey.”
Sheila closed her eyes.
Not surprising anymore.
Nothing about Glenn surprised any of us.
I kept reading.
“I discovered transfers from money I had given her into Glenn’s accounts.”
“When I confronted him, he threatened to tell you about Kelsey in the cruelest possible way.”
“I was ashamed.”
“I let him use that shame against me.”
My hand began shaking.
Gene hadn’t hidden Kelsey because he didn’t love me.
He hid her because shame turned into leverage.
Glenn had been blackmailing my husband.
Possibly for years.
I continued.
“The second will was my attempt to make things right.”
“Not only with Kelsey.”
“With you.”
“I reduced what passed directly to you because I wanted Evan protected separately and Kelsey provided for without giving Glenn control over everything.”
“I intended to replace Glenn as trustee.”
“I never completed the amendment.”
Evan whispered, “He died first.”
I nodded.
Gene had died suddenly from a heart attack.
Maybe he thought he still had time.
We all think that.
I reached the final paragraph.
Then I stopped breathing.
Stacey, there is one more thing you need to know.
Kelsey is not the person I am most afraid of.
Glenn knows about the land.
I looked up.
“What land?”
Sheila stared at me.
Brooke stared at her mother.
Raymond asked, “What land?”
I read the next line.
“The forty acres outside Lafayette.”
My heart stopped.
Gene’s family once owned farmland near Lafayette.
I thought it had been sold decades ago.
Gene always said his father lost it after medical debts.
The letter continued.
“My father never sold it.”
“He placed it in a holding trust.”
“When he died, control passed to me.”
“I never told anyone except Glenn because he helped me locate the old trust documents.”
I could barely hear my own voice.
Evan asked, “How much is forty acres worth?”
Raymond answered carefully.
“Depends entirely on location.”
I kept reading.
Then I reached the sentence that explained everything.
“Two years ago, a developer offered me $1.8 million for it.”
The entire room froze.
Sheila whispered, “One point eight million?”
I kept reading.
“I refused.”
“I wanted the land preserved for Evan and any grandchildren.”
“Lainey,” I whispered.<br
