I stopped caring.<\/p>\n
That surprised me too.<\/p>\n
For a while, I thought revenge would be part of healing.<\/p>\n
That I\u2019d need him to fail in order to feel whole again.<\/p>\n
But success, real success, has a strange way of making old bitterness look small.<\/p>\n
Not harmless.<\/p>\n
Just small.<\/p>\n
A year or so after my promotion, I saw him once across a hotel conference lobby during a regional business event.<\/p>\n
He saw me too.<\/p>\n
There was a flicker of recognition.<\/p>\n
A pause.<\/p>\n
Then a kind of embarrassed stiffness in the way he straightened his jacket.<\/p>\n
I was with Daniel at the time, on our way to a panel discussion.<\/p>\n
Nick looked from me to Daniel, then back to me.<\/p>\n
And in that instant, I knew he had heard.<\/p>\n
Not every detail.<\/p>\n
But enough.<\/p>\n
Enough to understand that the man he fired in contempt had landed somewhere far beyond what he had imagined.<\/p>\n
He gave me a tight nod.<\/p>\n
I returned it.<\/p>\n
Then I kept walking.<\/p>\n
No speech.<\/p>\n
No smug smile.<\/p>\n
No grand moment.<\/p>\n
Just movement.<\/p>\n
Forward.<\/p>\n
That was all I wanted.<\/p>\n
Forward.<\/p>\n
And maybe that is the final shape of the thing.<\/p>\n
Not triumph.<\/p>\n
Not karma.<\/p>\n
Forward.<\/p>\n
A man leaves home expecting a normal Monday.<\/p>\n
A woman collapses on the side of the road.<\/p>\n
He stops.<\/p>\n
He loses something.<\/p>\n
He gains something else.<\/p>\n
He becomes, in the process, a little more himself.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s the whole story.<\/p>\n
Messy.<\/p>\n
Painful.<\/p>\n
Unlikely.<\/p>\n
Human.<\/p>\n
And every now and then, when I\u2019m leaving the office after a long day and the building is mostly empty, I pass the glass wall near the lobby and catch my own reflection.<\/p>\n
Older now than I was then.<\/p>\n
A little grayer at the temples.<\/p>\n
A little thicker around the middle.<\/p>\n
Still carrying too much responsibility on some days.<\/p>\n
Still worrying more than Emily says is healthy.<\/p>\n
Still trying.<\/p>\n
But when I look at that reflection, I don\u2019t see the man who got fired.<\/p>\n
I see the man who stopped.<\/p>\n
And I think that made all the difference.<\/p>\n
