Money makes people curious. A large amount of money makes them forget their manners. The statement shows the balance of the Parker Agricultural Trust. Upon my death, you become its sole successor trustee and beneficiary.<br \/>\nCarol\u2019s breath caught.<br \/>\nDale muttered, \u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<br \/>\nJune gripped my arm.<br \/>\n\u201cKeep reading.\u201d<br \/>\nThe money came from the sale of the western acreage and the wind-energy agreement I signed eight years ago. I invested most of it. Enclosed are statements from two doctors confirming that I was competent when I signed the trust and deed. They will say you pressured me. Mr. Albright has recordings of four private meetings you did not know occurred. They will say this is unfair. When they do, show them the ledger.<br \/>\nThe brass key opens the steel cabinet inside the machine shed.<br \/>\nDo not open the farmhouse until you speak with Miriam Hayes at the bank.<br \/>\nThere is something else you need to know.<br \/>\nThe next sentence had been heavily underlined.<br \/>\nSomeone in this family has been taking money from me.<br \/>\nMy eyes rose from the page.<br \/>\nNobody moved.<br \/>\nEven Aunt Carol seemed to stop breathing.<br \/>\nJune took the letter and read the sentence herself.<br \/>\n\u201cTaking money how?\u201d Mark asked.<br \/>\nDale shoved both hands into his pockets.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is ridiculous. If someone stole from him, why didn\u2019t he call the police?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMaybe he didn\u2019t know who it was,\u201d Tommy said.<br \/>\nThe letter answered him.<br \/>\nI know who did it. I also know that person will try one last time after my death. Miriam has been instructed to wait, watch, and preserve everything.<br \/>\nJune immediately pulled out her phone.<br \/>\nShe dialed the number on Miriam Hayes\u2019s card and put the call on speaker.<br \/>\nA woman answered on the second ring.<br \/>\n\u201cKansas Prairie Bank. I told you something was wrong. Three million dollars doesn\u2019t appear out of nowhere.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt didn\u2019t,\u201d I said. \u201cHe sold land.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd who convinced him to hide it?\u201d<br \/>\nJune\u2019s face hardened.<br \/>\n\u201cStop.\u201d<br \/>\nIt was the first time she had raised her voice.<br \/>\nEveryone did stop.<br \/>\nJune spoke into the phone.<br \/>\n\u201cMs. Hayes, my grandfather\u2019s letter says someone was taking money from him.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat is correct.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid you find out who?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe found seventeen unauthorized withdrawals made during the last fourteen months of his life. They totaled $286,000.\u201d<br \/>\nMark swore under his breath.<br \/>\nTommy\u2019s wife asked, \u201cHow could nobody notice that?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMost were disguised as payments for medical care, property repairs, and farm expenses,\u201d Miriam explained. \u201cYour grandfather noticed when he received an invoice for a new irrigation pump. The farm has not used that irrigation system since 2009.\u201d<br \/>\nJune glanced toward the machine shed.<br \/>\n\u201cDid Grandpa report it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe asked us not to stop the transfers immediately. He wanted to trace where the money was going.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd did you?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\nAunt Carol\u2019s fingers began tapping against her arm.<br \/>\nDale would not look at anyone.<br \/>\nFor the first time, I wondered whether Grandpa\u2019s letter had predicted their reactions because he knew their personalities\u2014or because he already knew which one of them had betrayed him.<br \/>\nJune asked the question all of us were afraid to ask.<br \/>\n\u201cWhose account received the money?\u201d<br \/>\nMiriam hesitated.<br \/>\n\u201cI cannot disclose that over speakerphone. I need you to come to the bank with Mr. Albright tomorrow morning.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen why did Grandpa tell me to call before entering the house?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause someone entered it at 8:12 this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>June\u2019s eyes moved toward the porch.<br \/>\nThe front door appeared closed, but from where we stood, I could see something I had missed before.<br \/>\nA narrow black gap ran between the door and its frame.<br \/>\nIt was not completely latched.<br \/>\n\u201cWho entered?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cOur security company received an alert from the private safe installed in your grandfather\u2019s study. The person used the correct door code but entered the wrong safe combination three times.\u201d<br \/>\nDale turned toward his Jeep.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ve heard enough.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t leave,\u201d June said.<br \/>\nHe stopped.<br \/>\nIt was not the order that stopped him.<br \/>\nIt was the distant wail of sirens approaching along County Road 18.<br \/>\nAunt Carol\u2019s face twisted with fury.<br \/>\n\u201cYou called the police?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo,\u201d June said.<br \/>\n\u201cI did,\u201d Miriam answered through the phone. \u201cYour grandfather instructed me to dispatch them if anyone opened that door before Ms. Parker contacted me.\u201d<br \/>\nMark backed away from the farmhouse.<br \/>\nTommy\u2019s wife hurried to their truck.<br \/>\nDale looked as though he might run, but a sheriff\u2019s cruiser appeared at the end of the road before he could move.<br \/>\nJune stared at the brass key taped to the index card.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat is in the safe?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe don\u2019t know,\u201d Miriam said. \u201cYour grandfather never told us. But we know what the intruder was searching for.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe original trust documents.\u201d<br \/>\nCarol pointed at June.<br \/>\n\u201cSearch her truck. She got here first.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe arrived less than ten minutes ago,\u201d I said.<br \/>\n\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean she wasn\u2019t here earlier.\u201d<br \/>\nJune looked wounded, but not surprised.<br \/>\nShe had spent her whole life being the easiest person in the family to blame.<br \/>\nThe sheriff\u2019s cruiser stopped beside us.<br \/>\nDeputy Harris stepped out, followed by a second officer. I had known Harris since high school. His expression told me this was not a friendly visit.<br \/>\n\u201cNobody leaves,\u201d he announced.<br \/>\nHe asked for our names, photographed the vehicles, and sent the second officer toward the house.<br \/>\nThen he looked at June.<br \/>\n\u201cMa\u2019am, would you open the back of your truck?\u201d<br \/>\nAunt Carol smiled.<br \/>\nJune handed him her keys.<br \/>\nThe tailgate came down.<br \/>\nThere was nothing inside except the blue cooler, a bag of groceries, jumper cables, and a cardboard box filled with Grandpa\u2019s old clothes.<br \/>\nDeputy Harris lifted the cooler lid.<br \/>\nThree empty Cool Whip tubs sat inside it.<br \/>\nEach one had a strip of masking tape across the top.<br \/>\nWEDNESDAY\u2014MEATLOAF.<br \/>\nWEDNESDAY\u2014POTATO SOUP.<br \/>\nWEDNESDAY\u2014CHICKEN AND RICE.<br \/>\nGrandpa had washed and saved every container she brought him.<br \/>\nJune covered her mouth.<br \/>\n\u201cHe kept them?\u201d<br \/>\nBefore anyone could answer, the second officer shouted from the porch.<br \/>\n\u201cHarris, you need to see this.\u201d<br \/>\nWe all turned.<br \/>\nThe officer was holding a torn piece of blue fabric.<br \/>\nJune looked down at her work shirt.<br \/>\nThe same blue fabric.<br \/>\nThe sleeve near her elbow was ripped.<br \/>\nAunt Carol pointed at it triumphantly.<br \/>\n\u201cThere!
