Noah.

His fever still burned beneath my palm.

“Hey, buddy.”

“Mommy.”

“She’s coming.”

That was a lie.

But I needed him to believe it.

“You’re going home.”

Noah closed his eyes.

I looked at Vale.

“You got what you wanted from him.”

“Almost.”

“What else?”

“Your sample.”

“Then he leaves.”

Vale smiled.

“You have my word.”

“I don’t want your word.”

“It’s all you have.”

I rolled up my sleeve.

“Do it.”

A technician entered.

She tied a band around my arm.

Inserted the needle.

Dark red blood flowed into the tube.

One vial.

Then another.

Then a third.

“Enough.”

Vale nodded.

The technician removed the needle.

“Now release Noah.”

Vale took the first vial.

He held it toward the light.

Forty-two years ago, Charles Harrow had done almost exactly the same thing.

I remembered suddenly.

Not just Harrow.

Someone else had been in the the same scar.

My body went cold.

“You.”

Vale frowned.

“What?”

“I’ve seen you before.”

Impossible.

He looked fifty-five.

Forty-two years ago, he would have been a teenager.

Then the memory sharpened.

Not him.

Someone who looked exactly like him.

“Your perfected it.”

I looked at Noah.

“You’re sick.”

“No, Robert.”

Vale’s expression changed.

“My father was sick.”

“He experimented on families.”

“My father discovered something extraordinary and destroyed lives trying to prove it.”

That wasn’t the it.”

He stepped closer.

“But finishing it might.”

“What does that mean?”

Vale looked through the glass at my blood had it.”

“Yes.”

“You have it.”

“Yes.”

“And Noah?”

“No.”

“Then why him?”

Vale looked at the boy.

“Because his blood may contain the cure.”

My anger returned.

“You kidnapped him because you want to cure yourself.”

“No.”

“Don’t lie.”

Vale stepped closer.

“I’m already beyond treatment.”

For the first time, he the third mother.

Before I could ask, Vale interrupted.

“The names were part of the deception.”

I looked at him.

“What deception?”

He walked toward a locked cabinet.

“My father didn’t merely switch babies.”

He removed an old cassette recorder.

“He changed identities.”

The woman beside him started crying.

Vale pressed PLAY.

Static filled the room.

Then Margaret’s voice.

My wife.

Recorded decades earlier.

“If anyone ever hears this, Charles Harrow has already discovered that I know.”

My knees weakened.

Margaret continued.

“There were four herself Rebecca stood silently beside him.

I looked at her.

“Sarah was a newborn.”

Nobody answered.

“I held her in the hospital.”

My voice rose.

“She fit in one arm.”

Vale said quietly, “You held a newborn that night.”

“Exactly.”

“But that baby wasn’t Sarah.”

The room seemed to shrink.

I stared at him.

“What?”

“The child you held immediately after Margaret delivered was Baby
