\nRachel locked my front door and slipped the key into her pocket.

\nThe woman who had protected Richard\u2019s estate was part of the company trying to steal it.
\n\u201cOpen the door,\u201d I said.

\nRachel placed one hand on her leather folder.

\nRachel was speaking like a lawyer because she believed legal words could wash the guilt from her hands.

\nI remembered Daniel\u2019s warning through the security camera.

\n\u201cI did not forge your name.\u201d

\nRachel\u2019s face hardened.
\n\u201cListen to me carefully. Daniel and Vanessa will be charged. Their statements will contradict each other. Linda will testify against them. The guardianship order is suspended, and the deed will eventually be voided. You can survive years of court battles, or you can end this on Monday.\u201d
\n\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cConfirm the sale.\u201d
\nI stared at her.
\n\u201cThat is why you stayed.\u201d
\n\u201cClearview is willing to give you four hundred thousand dollars after fees.\u201d
\n\u201cThe offer was six hundred forty thousand.\u201d

\nRachel\u2019s eyes shifted toward the folder.

\nShe opened the folder and placed another contract on my table.

\nIf I confirmed the property transfer, Clearview would drop the penalty claim.
\nDaniel\u2019s company would receive one hundred twenty thousand dollars.
\nFrank and Linda would receive eighty thousand.
\nRachel\u2019s consulting business would receive sixty-four thousand.
\nI would receive the rest.
\nEveryone who had tried to steal my home would be rewarded for returning part of it.
\n\u201cYou expect me to sign this?\u201d
\n\u201cI expect you to think about what happens if you don\u2019t.\u201d
\n\u201cIs that a threat?\u201d
\n\u201cIt is reality. Daniel is your only child. Vanessa could lose her career. They may both go to prison. Your family will be publicly destroyed.\u201d
\n\u201cThey destroyed it.\u201d
\n\u201cYou can still save them.\u201d
\nRachel pushed a pen toward me.
\nI did not touch it.
\n\u201cOpen the door.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re emotional.\u201d
\n\u201cI have been injured, robbed, falsely declared incompetent, and nearly removed from my home. Yet I am still the calmest person in this room.\u201d
\nRachel grabbed her laptop.

\n\u201cI already have.\u201d
\nI slipped my phone from my pocket and placed it on the table.
\nThe screen showed a red timer.
\nTwenty-three minutes and eleven seconds.
\nRecording.
\nRachel\u2019s face changed.

\n\u201cYou stopped being my attorney the moment you secretly represented the buyer.\u201d
\nShe lunged for the phone.
\nI grabbed it first and stepped back.
\nThen someone knocked three times on my kitchen door.

\nThe kitchen door behind me.
\nRachel relaxed.

\n\u201cSomeone who can explain the situation better than I can.\u201d
\nThe door opened.
\nA tall man in a gray suit entered using the keypad code.
\nDaniel was the only person besides me who knew that code.
\nThe man closed the door behind him.

\n\u201cYou entered my home without permission.\u201d
\n\u201cWe\u2019re here to solve a mutual problem.\u201d
\n\u201cMy problem is that both of you are still inside.\u201d<\/p>\n
Victor placed a thick envelope beside Rachel\u2019s contract.
\n\u201cClearview has spent nearly one million dollars purchasing the properties surrounding yours. Without your parcel, the project cannot proceed.\u201d
\n\u201cThat sounds like your problem.\u201d
\nHe smiled.
\n\u201cYour late husband understood the importance of cooperation.\u201d
\n\u201cWhat does Richard have to do with this?\u201d
\n\u201cA great deal.\u201d
\nRachel quickly interrupted him.
\n\u201cWe should remain focused on Monday.\u201d
\nBut I had seen the fear in her eyes.
