The loan hasn\u2019t closed, but it\u2019s scheduled to close Monday morning.\u201d<br \/>\nIt was Friday.<br \/>\nThey had planned everything carefully.<br \/>\nMove Vanessa\u2019s parents into my house.<br \/>\nGain control of the property.<br \/>\nBorrow against it.<br \/>\nAnd if I objected, they would call me selfish until I doubted myself.<br \/>\nThe wine glass had not destroyed their plan.<br \/>\nIt had forced them to move faster.<br \/>\nRachel contacted the bank\u2019s fraud department and sent them copies of the police report, my identification, and a signed statement confirming that I had never transferred the property.<br \/>\nThe loan was temporarily frozen.<br \/>\nBut the forged deed could not simply be erased.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll have to file an action to restore the title,\u201d Rachel explained. \u201cThe good news is that the recording, the loan application, and Vanessa\u2019s messages have created a trail.\u201d<br \/>\nA trail Daniel had been arrogant enough to leave behind.<br \/>\nDetective Luis Morales arrived shortly after noon.<br \/>\nHe had taken over the assault investigation after the forged deed was reported.<br \/>\nHe examined the document and asked whether anyone had access to my identification.<br \/>\n\u201cMy driver\u2019s license is in my wallet.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHave you ever lost an older one?\u201d<br \/>\nI remembered renewing it eight months earlier.<br \/>\nThe old license had been clipped at the motor vehicle office and returned to me.<br \/>\nI had placed it inside a small lockbox in Richard\u2019s study.<br \/>\nDaniel knew where that lockbox was.<br \/>\nDetective Morales asked me to check it.<br \/>\nThe lockbox was still inside the bottom drawer.<br \/>\nBut my old driver\u2019s license was gone.<br \/>\nSo was a copy of my Social Security card.<br \/>\nA cold feeling spread through my chest.<br \/>\nDaniel had not simply betrayed me during an argument.<br \/>\nHe had entered my private study, opened my lockbox, and stolen the documents he needed to become me.<br \/>\nThe detective photographed everything.<br \/>\nThen he asked, \u201cDid your son know the combination?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWho did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly Richard and me.\u201d<br \/>\nRichard had been gone for six years.<br \/>\nThe lockbox showed no damage.<br \/>\nSomeone had opened it with the correct combination.<br \/>\nI tried to remember every moment Daniel had been alone in the study.<br \/>\nThen I remembered the night of Richard\u2019s memorial anniversary.<br \/>\nI had opened the box to retrieve one of his handwritten letters.<br \/>\nDaniel stood behind me while I entered the numbers.<br \/>\nI thought he was comforting me.<br \/>\nHe had been watching my fingers.<br \/>\nMy phone rang.<br \/>\nVanessa\u2019s name appeared on the screen.<br \/>\nDetective Morales told me to answer and put the call on speaker.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d I said.<br \/>\nVanessa\u2019s voice was calm.<br \/>\nToo calm.<br \/>\n\u201cMargaret, we need to stop attacking each other.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou threw a glass at me.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI made a mistake.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou forged a deed.\u201d<br \/>\nSilence.<br \/>\nRachel held up one finger, warning me not to continue.<br \/>\nVanessa finally laughed.<br \/>\n\u201cYou should be careful making accusations you can\u2019t prove.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI can prove I own my house.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDo you?\u201d<br \/>\nMy stomach tightened.<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019ve lived alone for six years,\u201d she continued. \u201cYou forget things. You signed papers and probably don\u2019t remember.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI remember everything.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat isn\u2019t what Daniel says.\u201d<br \/>\nThe call ended.<br \/>\nDetective Morales looked at Rachel.<br \/>\n\u201cThat sounded rehearsed.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt was,\u201d Rachel replied.<br \/>\nA few minutes later, someone knocked on my front door.<br \/>\nThomas Reed stood outside holding a large envelope.<br \/>\nHe had found it pushed beneath a shrub near my mailbox.<br \/>\nIt was addressed to me and stamped by the Franklin County Probate Court.<br \/>\nThe bottom corner had been torn, as if someone had tried to open it before hiding it.<br \/>\nRachel put on gloves before touching it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>Inside was a notice of an emergency guardianship petition.<br \/>\nMy son had asked a judge to declare me mentally incompetent.<br \/>\nThe petition claimed I had become forgetful, paranoid, and financially irresponsible after Richard\u2019s death.<br \/>\nIt said I had accused family members of stealing from me.<br \/>\nIt said I frequently became aggressive when anyone questioned my decisions.<br \/>\nAnd it claimed I had injured myself during Easter dinner before falsely blaming Vanessa.<br \/>\n\u201cHe planned to use the assault against you,\u201d Detective Morales said.<br \/>\nRachel turned to the next page.<br \/>\nDaniel had listed himself as the person best qualified to manage my finances, medical decisions, and property.<br \/>\nIf approved, he could control my bank accounts.<br \/>\nHe could make decisions about my house.<br \/>\nHe could even decide where I lived.<br \/>\nVanessa had signed a sworn statement supporting every lie.<br \/>\nFrank and Linda Mercer had signed as witnesses.<br \/>\nBut the most damaging page was a medical evaluation.<br \/>\nA doctor claimed to have examined me three weeks earlier and concluded that I showed signs of serious cognitive decline.<br \/>\n\u201cI never met this doctor,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nRachel read the name.<br \/>\nDr. Stephen Caldwell.<br \/>\nVanessa worked at his medical practice.<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s why she was worried about her job finding out about the assault charge,\u201d Rachel said. \u201cShe may have used office records or his signature.\u201d<br \/>\nDetective Morales photographed the evaluation.<br \/>\n\u201cIf this signature is forged too, they\u2019re in much deeper trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel checked the hearing information.<br \/>\nThe emergency petition had been filed that morning.<br \/>\nThe court hearing was scheduled for Monday at eight thirty.<br \/>\nBut then she noticed a smaller line at the bottom of the final page.<br \/>\nHer expression changed.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\nShe didn\u2019t answer.<br \/>\nShe grabbed her phone and called the probate court.<br \/>\nShe gave the clerk the case number, identified herself as my attorney, and listened.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen was that order issued?\u201d she asked.<br \/>\nA pause.<br \/>\n\u201cWho was appointed?\u201d<br \/>\nAnother pause.<br \/>\n\u201cWas the court told Mrs. Lawson had already been notified?\u201d<br \/>\nRachel closed her eyes.<br \/>\n\u201cNo. She was not notified.
