\n\u201cWhat do you mean someone is inside?\u201d I asked.
\n\u201cWe received another emergency call from the same address,\u201d the dispatcher said. \u201cA man reported that he was trapped upstairs.\u201d
\nMy hand tightened around the phone.
\n\u201cWhat man?\u201d
\n\u201cHe identified himself as Robert Monroe.\u201d
\nMy father.
\nRachel heard the name and immediately stood.
\nI stared at the black camera feed.
\nDad had left Rachel\u2019s office less than three hours earlier.
\nHe had threatened me.
\nNow he was inside my burning lake house.
\n\u201cIs he still on the line?\u201d I asked.
\n\u201cWe lost contact with him. Fire and rescue units are approaching the property.\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019m driving there.\u201d

\nI was already moving toward the door.

\nI stopped breathing.

\nThe firefighters pulled my father onto the ladder.

\n\u201cWe found footprints behind the house leading toward the county road. We believe another vehicle collected her.\u201d
\nI thought of my mother.

\nWhen we reached the lake house, firefighters had contained most of the flames.
\nThe kitchen was destroyed.
\nHalf the roof had collapsed.
\nWater poured through the ceiling.

The place no longer smelled like coffee and pine.
\nIt smelled like smoke, chemicals, and wet ash.
\nA firefighter stopped me at the edge of the driveway.

\nHe looked toward the roof.
\n\u201cThe structure may be repairable, but there\u2019s extensive damage.\u201d
\nI nodded as if he had told me something ordinary.

\nOne sleeve was dark with blood.
\nA deputy placed the metal bar and fuel can into evidence bags.
\n\u201cThe surviving exterior camera captured the suspect arriving,\u201d he said. \u201cYour recording also captured her threatening you.\u201d
\n\u201cShe knew my father was inside.\u201d
\n\u201cWe\u2019ll need his statement to establish that.\u201d
\n\u201cWhy was he here?\u201d

\nI looked at the ruined house.
\n\u201cHe was probably trying to destroy something.\u201d
\nA firefighter approached carrying a small black metal box.
\n\u201cWe found this beneath a loose floorboard in the upstairs office.\u201d
\nThe edges were scorched, but the box remained locked.

\nHe looked toward Rachel.

\n\u201cVanessa tried to burn down my house with you inside. This isn\u2019t a private conversation.\u201d
\n\u201cShe didn\u2019t know I was there.\u201d
\n\u201cThe dispatcher said you called from inside. Tell me what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dad removed the oxygen mask.
\n\u201cI went back for the records.\u201d

\n\u201cCash payments. Account numbers. Copies of the documents Evelyn notarized.\u201d
\n\u201cWhy hide them at my lake house?\u201d
\n\u201cVanessa thought it was safer than keeping everything at home.\u201d
\n\u201cSo you used my property to hide evidence of stealing my property.\u201d
\nHe closed his eyes again.
\n\u201cI was going to destroy it.\u201d
\n\u201cOf course you were.\u201d
\n\u201cWhen I arrived, Vanessa was already there.\u201d

\n\u201cPouring fuel in the kitchen.\u201d

\n\u201cI told her the police had the cloud records. I said burning the house wouldn\u2019t fix anything.\u201d

\n\u201cShe demanded the box.\u201d

\n\u201cMoney.\u201d
\n\u201cHow much?\u201d
\n\u201cAlmost ninety thousand dollars.\u201d
\nI stared at him.

\n\u201cCash from the rentals. Some of the buyer\u2019s deposit. Money she didn\u2019t report in the company accounts.\u201d
\n\u201cShe hid ninety thousand dollars beneath my floor?\u201d
\n\u201cShe was saving it in case everything collapsed.\u201d
\n\u201cAnd you went there to take it.\u201d
\n\u201cI wanted to return it.\u201d
\n\u201cNo. You wanted to hide it before the police found it.\u201d
\nHis silence answered me.
\n\u201cWhat happened after you refused to give her the box?\u201d
\n\u201cShe hit me with the metal bar.\u201d
\nMy eyes moved to the bandage on his head.
\n\u201cWhen I woke up, the room was filling with smoke. She had blocked the staircase with a cabinet.\u201d
\n\u201cShe knew you were inside.\u201d
\nHe nodded.
\n\u201cSay it.\u201d
\n\u201cVanessa knew.\u201d

\nFor the first time, my father looked small.

\nHis mouth opened.

\n\u201cYour wife\u2019s car was recorded near the county road fifteen minutes after the fire began.\u201d
\nDad stared at her.
\n\u201cCarrying a passenger,\u201d Detective Kim continued. \u201cThe passenger matched Vanessa\u2019s description.\u201d
\nMy mother had helped Vanessa escape.
\nEven after Vanessa tried to kill Dad, Mom had chosen to protect her.

\nDad was lying in a hospital bed.

\nI switched to the living-room camera.
\nMy mother stood beside the front window.
