They had the same sharp cheekbones, gray eyes, and small crescent-shaped scar beside the left ear.
Daniel moved between us. “Who are you?”
“My name is Eleanor Shaw,” she replied. “Evelyn is my identical twin sister.”
“That’s impossible,” I said. “I have known Evelyn since I was a child. She never had a sister.”
“That was the purpose of making me disappear.”

Eleanor pressed a button beneath the conference table. The glass doors locked, and the security cameras in the corners turned away.
Daniel reached for his phone.
“You can call for help,” she said. “But Evelyn will be here in less than ten minutes, and the officers with her have been told that I kidnapped Olivia.”
“You impersonated a board chair, stole company documents, and locked us inside a room,” Daniel replied. “Kidnapping is not an unreasonable conclusion.”
“I didn’t steal anything.” Eleanor placed the blue folder on the table. “I protected the only evidence Grant and Evelyn haven’t destroyed.”
I picked up the photograph. My father stood between the two sisters outside Northstar’s original laboratory. All three looked young. My father had his arm around Eleanor’s shoulder, while Evelyn stood slightly apart.
A date had been written on the back.
It was taken thirty-one years earlier—four years before I was born.
“You knew my father before Northstar existed,” I said.
“I didn’t merely know him. I helped him build Northstar.”
Daniel shook his head. “There is no record of you.”
“There was, until Evelyn erased it.”
Eleanor explained that she had been a biomedical researcher while Evelyn studied finance. My father developed the vision for Northstar, Eleanor designed its first diagnostic system, and Evelyn found the investors.
For three years, they worked together.
Then Eleanor discovered that Evelyn had altered safety results to impress a major investor. When Eleanor threatened to expose her, her car was forced off a mountain road.
“The newspapers reported that you died?” I asked.
“No. They reported that the unidentified passenger burned beyond recognition. Evelyn made certain no one looked too closely.”
My father found Eleanor alive in a private hospital. He moved her out of the country and paid her to remain hidden until he could remove Evelyn from Northstar without destroying the company.
“But he never removed her,” I said.
“He tried. That is why he died.”
My chest tightened.
Daniel stepped closer to Eleanor. “You expect us to believe Evelyn murdered Olivia’s father, then spent years protecting his daughter?”
“She wasn’t protecting Olivia. She was keeping her close.”
“Why?”
Eleanor looked at me with something that resembled pity.
“Because Evelyn needed you to trust the man she placed in your life.”
“Grant?”
Eleanor nodded.
Before I could question her, someone pounded on the locked doors.
“Seattle Police!” a voice called. “Unlock this room!”
Eleanor checked her watch. “She arrived faster than I expected.”
Daniel looked through the glass. Four police officers stood in the hallway. Beside them was Evelyn Shaw—the real Evelyn.
She still wore the dark blue dress visible in Lena’s hospital photograph. Rain covered the shoulders of her coat, and fury burned in her eyes.
For most of my life, I had considered Evelyn family. She attended my birthdays, taught me how to read financial statements, and stood beside me when my father’s casket was lowered into the ground.
Now I could not stop staring at her hands.
Had those hands killed him?

Evelyn pressed her palm against the glass.
“Olivia, step away from her,” she shouted. “That woman is dangerous.”
Eleanor laughed bitterly. “Thirty-one years, and you’re still telling the same lie.”
“Unlock the door!” Evelyn ordered.
“Tell Olivia who Grant really is.”
Evelyn’s expression changed.
It lasted less than a second, but I saw it.
Fear.
Daniel saw it too.
I turned to Eleanor. “What do you mean?”
Instead of answering, she opened the blue folder and removed a small flash drive taped beneath the board resolution.
“Your father gave this to me three days before he died,” she said. “I was supposed to release it if anything happened to him.”
“Then why did you wait?”
“Because I couldn’t decrypt it. Your father protected it with two separate keys. He gave me one and hid the second inside Northstar’s Seattle acquisition files.”
The room suddenly made sense.
The rushed acquisition, the fake video, the forged signature, and the eleven-point-four-million-dollar transfer were not only about stealing money.
Grant and Evelyn were trying to acquire the servers containing the second key before anyone knew it existed.
“Grant found you,” I said.
“Eleven months ago. He promised to help me expose Evelyn if I impersonated her long enough to collect evidence.”
“You trusted my husband?”
“I trusted my hatred. That was my mistake.”
Eleanor admitted she had appeared as Evelyn during three board meetings. Grant used those appearances to copy the trust-protector token and authorize the fraudulent payments. He registered Orison Advisory under Evelyn’s identity, promising the account would prove Evelyn’s guilt.
“But he controlled the money,” Eleanor said. “When I realized he planned to blame everything on you and disappear after the acquisition, I contacted your father’s former investigator. He was the person who sent you the anonymous envelope.”
The pounding grew louder.
An officer began working on the door’s electronic lock.
Evelyn raised her phone and called me.
I answered on speaker.
“Olivia, listen carefully,” she said. “Eleanor is mentally unstable. She killed your father after he refused to give her part of Northstar. She has spent years blaming me.”
“If that is true,” I replied, “why didn’t you ever tell me she existed?”
“To protect you.”
“From what?”
“From exactly what is happening now.”
Eleanor leaned toward the phone. “Tell her who Grant’s mother is.”
Evelyn immediately ended the call.
Daniel’s face went still.
I looked from him to Eleanor. “Finish what you started.”
“Decrypt the drive first.”

I inserted it into the conference-room computer. A password box appeared, followed by two key requests.
Eleanor entered the first key.
I called Lena and told her where to find the second one. She accessed the recovered acquisition files while the police continued forcing the door.
“Found it,” Lena said after several tense seconds. “Sending the key now.”
A file appeared on the screen.
FINAL NIGHT—IF I DO NOT SURVIVE.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The recording began with the familiar sound of my father’s study clock. Then I heard his voice.
“You used Grant to reach my daughter.”
A woman answered.
Evelyn.
“I introduced them,” she said. “Olivia chose to marry him.”
“She chose him because you spent years teaching her to trust you.”
“She loves Grant.”
“Grant doesn’t love anyone.”
I felt as if the floor had shifted beneath me.
The police struck the door again. A crack appeared beside the lock.
On the recording, my father continued.
“I know about the fake consulting accounts. I know Grant married Olivia to gain access to her trust. Tomorrow morning, I am removing you as trust protector and telling her everything.”
“You’ll destroy her.”
“No. You will never control her again.”
Evelyn’s voice became colder.
“She is weak. Grant says she signs anything he places in front of her.”
“She trusted her husband. That does not make her weak.”
“He will give her the family you never could.”
“What does that mean?”
A long silence followed.
Then my father spoke again, this time barely above a whisper.
“Grant is your son.”
Eleanor watched my reaction carefully.
I could not breathe.
Grant had never spoken about his biological mother. He claimed she died when he was a child and that he grew up moving between relatives.
It had all been a lie.
Evelyn’s voice returned on the recording.
“I gave him away to protect my career. Bringing him into Northstar was the least I owed him.”
“You ordered your own son to marry Olivia.”
“I gave him an opportunity.”
“You turned my daughter’s marriage into a business transaction.”
“By the time she discovers the truth, her shares will belong to him.”
The officers hit the door again. The electronic lock sparked.
Daniel whispered, “We need to copy that file.”
Lena was already downloading it through the secure connection.
On the recording, my father opened a drawer.
“I changed Olivia’s trust this afternoon. Grant will receive nothing from her—married or divorced. If I die, control passes directly to Olivia.”
A glass shattered.
Then Evelyn said five words that froze the blood in my veins.
“Grant, you may come in.”
Footsteps crossed my father’s study.

A man spoke.
My husband.
“You should have stayed out of this,” Grant told him.
The recording filled with the sound of a struggle. My father gasped, something heavy struck the floor, and the study clock stopped ticking.
Then Grant said, “What do we tell Olivia?”
Evelyn answered without hesitation.
“That her father’s heart failed.”
The conference-room door burst open.
Police officers rushed inside with their weapons raised. The real Evelyn stood behind them, staring at the recording on the screen.
“You don’t understand,” she said. “That audio was manipulated.”
Eleanor lifted her hands and stepped away from the table.
I held my phone up. “Lena, did you save it?”
“I have the entire recording,” she confirmed. “And I just found the original security archive. The audio is real.”
Evelyn turned and ran.
One officer caught her before she reached the elevator. She fought wildly as he forced her hands behind her back.
“This is Eleanor’s fault!” Evelyn screamed. “Grant forced me! He planned everything!”
Daniel’s phone rang.
His face changed the moment he answered.
“What happened?” I asked.
He lowered the phone slowly.
“Grant has disappeared.”

“From where?”
“Airport security released him because the board suspension wasn’t an arrest. He left in a hired car twenty minutes after our flight.”
My phone vibrated with an incoming video call from Grant.
I answered.
He was standing inside my father’s study.
Behind him, the private vault was open.
In one hand, Grant held an envelope bearing my father’s handwriting.
In the other, he held a silver lighter.
The envelope read: TO OLIVIA—THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR MARRIAGE.
Grant flicked the lighter, and a flame appeared.
“You took my company,” he said calmly. “You took my mother. Now I’m going to take the last secret your father left you.”
He held the flame beneath the envelope.
Then he smiled.
“Unless you come home alone.”..

Click Here to continue read next PART4: “Seconds before boarding my flight, I posted one final announcement:

PART 3: THE SISTER WHO NEVER EXISTED “ONE OF THESE WOMEN WILL KILL ME.” I read my father’s handwritten warning twice before looking at the stranger again.
