Did you bring house rules?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That got the smile.<\/p>\n<p>Barely.<\/p>\n<p>Then it vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked enough like Daniel that strangers sometimes assumed they were twins despite the age difference. Same gray-blue eyes. Same shoulders. Years of marriage had trained hospitality into me so thoroughly that apparently I would offer beverages during my own prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom says Elaine let her stay one night, then threw her out before breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I set the pitcher down harder than necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel answered first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine didn\u2019t throw anybody out. I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That clearly wasn\u2019t in the story he\u2019d heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Mom moved into our house without permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew she was thinking about selling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you told her she could stay here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell her she couldn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the table.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas sat back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, there you go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s head came up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I was an idiot for not saying no. That still doesn\u2019t turn it into yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>That might have been the first time in twenty-four years I heard Daniel admit fault without explaining how circumstances technically made it someone else\u2019s problem.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy couldn\u2019t she stay a few weeks while she found somewhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t come for a few weeks,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe brought a fern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plant, three suitcases, her medication case, and Rebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca was moving in too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel and I exchanged a look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t know?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Mom said Rebecca was helping her settle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe settled pretty quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The house rules were still tucked beneath a stack of mail on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>I almost reached for them.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent years explaining myself in this family.<\/p>\n<p>Why I didn\u2019t like Marjorie rearranging my kitchen drawers.<\/p>\n<p>Why I wanted Christmas morning with Daniel and our kids before the extended family arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Why I disliked hearing comments about how much I paid for groceries in a house Marjorie didn\u2019t fund.<\/p>\n<p>Every boundary apparently required a closing argument.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled my hand away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not presenting evidence for the right to sleep in my own bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pointed toward the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey planned to take our room. You called yesterday and told me you were ashamed of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said Mom was ashamed of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuch better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas put the paper down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought all this had been arranged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2019s been telling people since spring she\u2019d probably be moving in here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room changed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told people that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Janet knew. I think Debbie did too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you two had plenty of room and you told her you\u2019d figure something out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel went pale.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that phrase.<\/p>\n<p>He had almost certainly used those exact words.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s version of avoiding a fight.<\/p>\n<p>Marjorie\u2019s version of approval.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, I thought selling the condo was partly because of Rebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Rebecca?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really don\u2019t know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are few sentences less comforting in a family conversation.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that Marjorie had used some of the money from the condo sale to pay off several of Rebecca\u2019s credit cards.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t know the exact amount.<\/p>\n<p>Only that Marjorie had complained about Rebecca\u2019s finances after her divorce.<\/p>\n<p>I slowly sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Marjorie sold her home, paid Rebecca\u2019s debts, and then both of them arrived here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas lifted a hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not saying Rebecca stole anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say she did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And I didn\u2019t believe she had.<\/p>\n<p>That would almost have been simpler.<\/p>\n<p>Marjorie had chosen to rescue her.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca had been divorced for several years. She worked at a dental office most weekdays, yet somehow every financial emergency still ended with Marjorie opening her checkbook.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at the apartment listings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom can\u2019t keep doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gave him a tired look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has been doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence followed me for the rest of the night.<\/p>\n<p>Because after Thomas left, Daniel sat quietly at the kitchen table while I loaded the dishwasher.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he said, \u201cMaybe Mom could stay here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>He immediately added, \u201cWithout Rebecca.
